Cool On The Exterior, Warm Within

Living like you game

Tuesday, January 30, 2007 @ 9:26 PM

Blogger is leaving me with no choice but to switch to the new version. Sigh. I'm a stickler for familiarity. And I don't feel like switching when I've gotten used to the current one. Oh well, maybe there will be fantastic new features that will help me change my mind.

I realise networking is like a game of The Sims. You brandish your namecard holder like it is the ultimate conversation starter and go around the room shaking hands and fawning over each other as if the new acquaintance is freshly crowned royalty. You start talking about everything and anything on Earth, some of which may not make much sense. Ran out of topics? Excuse yourself politely and look for a new chat partner. And all around the room, you see fellow Sims huddled in small groups, all with speech bubbles hovering above their heads. Make a bad move and you sense your companion cool towards you. Your budding relationship indicator wanes. And you are back to ground zero.

There was a Sim who started to sing dirty hokkien songs after he's downed a few drinks. Another who spoke as if he was writing an essay in very proper english. And not forgetting the one who wouldn't touch the finger food served coz they were mostly fried.

It still surprises me sometimes how the world is so small. It is a living friendster community.

BKK beckons enticingly. And my anticipation mounts after reading forum after forum today. Yoohoo!

Pitter Patter

Thursday, January 18, 2007 @ 9:09 PM

It started raining pitter patter this afternoon. I groaned inwardly, thinking that it would be a hassle getting home if the rain were to continue in such intensity. What was most interesting though, was my colleague's exclamation that it was raining in her cubicle. Literally.

Cozily cooped up in a little shophouse, our charming little office next to the river was under siege. By H2O. Defense mechanisms in the form of clay pots were dispensed in a hurry but it wasn't until the rain stopped that we won the battle. Our biggest fear was that all the rain water running amok would short circuit our electricity.

My 2nd day at work so far and it looks like the days ahead will be packed with activities. The folks are nice but I've been inhaling a little more 2nd hand smoke than necessary. If I ever end up on that cold slab in the morgue, you guys know what happened. Heh.

I'm youngest on the team once again but it seems that I will have lots to learn and pick up along the way. No vices hopefully!

As the days to BKK draws near, I am filled with increasing anticipation. Finally we will be going! Finally finally finally... =) Even I was surprised by the lack of disapproval I faced when I broke the news, after the sumptuous meal I prepared. But of coz, I ain't complaining.

A Virgin Attempt

Tuesday, January 16, 2007 @ 5:04 PM

Since this is technically my last day of freedom, I decided to indulge in some domesticity and give my ma a surprise. The last time I actually made any dish was way back... when I was 12? So what I had planned today was really, rather ambitious for me.

First up, long bean omelette!

Then, tofu with button mushrooms!

And last but not least, my pride and joy - Chinese Pear Honey Tonic Soup.

Though amateurish in presentation, the dishes did taste pretty authentic. Hah. Now, with more practice, I could certainly consider being a chef for my next career.

Let's just hope my effort makes my mission easier, later tonight. =X

Passing The Test

Monday, January 15, 2007 @ 1:36 AM

"So where do you think the finance economy is headed?"

After this question, I thought I was screwed. But by some miraculous turn of events, I got the job. Lady Luck must have been smiling on me. Very benevolently.

I'm content. The benefits are good, the company is reputable and it seems like an exciting and challenging period ahead for me. As for colleagues and company culture, assessment would have to wait till I start work later this week. But I'm keeping my fingers crossed.

It feels like I've always fumbled-tumbled my way through in life. And I've not always been certain that I was on the right path. But for once, things seem to be turning out fine.

Ramblings

I love Tony Leung. His twinkling eyes and lopsided grin. I think he's the kind of man you would want to keep by your side for eternity.

~~~
BKK is so far, yet so near. I'm still cracking my head for a good way to break the news. Pls give me some positive news soon!
~~~

Tonight, I took a Merc cab for the first time. They sure can speed.

~~~
That stretch of Jurong Town Hall Road, next to the JE library, is my favorit-est road. The taxi driver took us for a 'takeoff' (in his terms) tonight. While we were nearing that huge bump in the road, he upped the speed, sending my heart into my throat. But it was... shiok!
~~~

The very same taxi uncle was the nicest I've ever met. He was very fatherly and made sure that I had gotten into the lift before he drove off.

~~~
I love german sausages, warm and juicy, dipped in mustard. Mmmm.
~~~

I love it when I know I got a bargain. How's $23 for a tube dress? :p

~~~
This year is the one when I'll turn 22. *gulps*
I wld prefer to be forever 21.
~~~

I don't think I've a lot of clothes but my wardrobe is full.

~~~
I have a hula hoop in my room but I've never been able to hula.
~~~

No one is happier than me when it rains these days. After holding out for a year or so, I finally bought a brolly. So any rainy day means a chance for me to brandish my new toy! :)

~~~
The hair makes the man literally. I loved Rain when he was in 'Full House' but his new crop seems less than charming on him. I also have a soft spot for Zai Zai, especially in his latest drama 'Silence' in which he co-stars with the Korean actress who acted as LianSheng in 'Jewel in the Palace'. I think his acting skills have improved tremendously! And that wry grin of his. Aww. It's really the hair la.
Skimpy synopsis of 'Silence': Instead of the usual storyline where the female lead falls victim to some deadly illness, this time it's Zaizai's turn. =X In the last few months of his life, he reunited with his childhood love (a mute girl he met in the hospital when he was 12) and learnt the true meaning of life.
~~~

I wonder how I had gotten all those little bruises on my legs.

~~~
I'll no longer be known as Lj... very soon.
CantThinkOfAnyTitle
Tuesday, January 09, 2007 @ 1:07 AM
A call woke me up from my beauty sleep this morning, bringing unexpectedly good news, which has the potential to become fabulously great news. Which is why I'm crossing all my fingers and toes for the rest of this week. Let you know if it really comes true!
So on an adrenaline rush of good cheer and humour, I completed another tenth of my pack-the-room operation. Which brings it up to 3/10! Everyone pls applaud! Thank you thank you.
These few weeks have been an endless spate of surprises. Pleasant surprises from friends all around; some who have found love, some who have been in luck. I'm really happy for them. But I'm wondering when my turn will come. Hoping for that turn in the tide.
I wonder if it's just me and my wall or it's just an inevitable gap that continues to yawn wider and wider. Am I pushing people away from me unintentionally? Or are we speaking two different languages while being face-to-face? My insecurity brings out the worst in me.
It's another rainy night, one that promises a good night's sleep with its soothing breeze and the pitter-patter of the raindrops. And perhaps as a new day dawns, I will forget all the nitty-pittys of past.
Happy New Year, Folks!
Tuesday, January 02, 2007 @ 1:26 AM
So 2007 is here!
Pops champagne, lets off poppers and makes a toast!
NY eve this year was a cozy affair, with mala steamboat, dessert and being high with girlfriends.
May new resolutions made be kept and may 2007 be a good year for all of us!
