Cool On The Exterior, Warm Within

Incident On The Train

Tuesday, March 28, 2006 @ 11:42 PM

Sometimes, the weirdest things happens at the most unexpected times.

Two men were flanking one corner of the doorway on the train, forming a small arc in front of a girl who was leaning against the glass panel, nonchalantly sms-ing on her mobile. Dressed in casual shirts and pants, the men carried big bags of groceries. One of the men leaned heavily against his arm on the metal pole and then gradually... got unsteady on his feet. He swayed about and his companion reached out to grab him as he flopped forward, almost landing on the girl, who looked up, startled.

For the first time during her journey, the girl realised that she was not in a good position and shifted her feet uneasily. Trapped between the two men, who were both holding on to the metal poles by her side, she would have difficulty moving herself to a safer place. She eyed the swaying man warily as his bespectacled friend pulled him to his side, supporting his dead weight. Just when the girl thought she could finally make a move, the man resisted his friend's help and insisted on holding on to the pole again, cutting off her escape route. The girl sighed silently.

Despite his brief moment of stubbornness, the man did not seem to be able to hold himself up and required his friend's assistance once again. As his friend spoke to him insistently in what the girl supposed was bengali, the man mumbled intelligibly. She smiled politely at the bespectacled companion and inquired with concern, 'Is he okay?' Worry more so for her own safety though, than for the well-being of the seemingly ill man. The companion replied in Bengali in an apologetic tone and the girl smiled wanly, dismayed at the realisation that they were not versed in the English language.

The final straw came when the man slumped forward onto the girl; as two pairs of hands held onto him and her turning her head away as his lolling head of hair brushed against her lips. She grimaced and quickly relinquished her comfortable position against the side panel, stepping away to safety. The man slouched down on the floor, against the panel.

Pale with relief, the girl counted her blessings as she stood to one side. She overheard a couple nearby commenting on the man being drunk and all. But her relief was shortlived. Looking down at her heels, she found that she was in contact with a liquid flowing across the floor, coming from the direction of the man crouched in the corner.

He had pee-ed in his pants.

And I was that unfortunate girl.

Sore in the Heart

Saturday, March 18, 2006 @ 12:32 AM

For once, I'm regretting my sensibility. Sigh.

Hosted some american guests at my company the other day and got them tickets to the Mosiac performance tonight. In the midst of checking out the performances for them, I was truly tempted to go for it myself.

So I wonder what got into me this evening, when the unlikely prospect of a spare tix popped up. I received a call, asking if I wished to go for the performance but I rejected it.
My excuse was: "I would love to but I've lessons tonight."
After I hung up, I was ready to strangle myself.

Tonight's was a sold-out performance by singer-songwriter, Jason Mraz. He is good, really.. I especially love his 'The Remedy' and 'You and I both' among others.

Check him out here:

Argh! I'm just a sore bear who denied himself his grapes. How dumb.

And to offer myself a little comfort, I bought home a tub of lychee
ice-cream. No worries, I didn't finish all of it at one go.
Though i was tempted to, what with forlorn thoughts of the 6 projects coming up for school..2 each for the 3 modules.

My apologies, I really am rather sore today.

Weird Ol Me

Sunday, March 12, 2006 @ 12:44 PM

I have not thought of myself as an extreme introvert but sometimes I suspect I might be so.

There are times when I can feel myself closing up from the world, like how a mimosa plant would shy away from touch..

Overcome by this feeling of despondence, or perhaps this need to be alone by myself, I would refrain from excessive contact with others. I've tried overcoming this internal barrier of mine, but I find that even if I make an extra effort to head out with friends, put up a facade of merriness and enjoyment.. everything still falls flat inside. Like a feeling of hollowness within and you are watching yourself interacting with others from a distance away.

And then after a while, you just give up on putting up this sham of yours and go into reticent mode.

But somehow, things do not get better even when you go off by yourself too.

I guess this is similar to situations when you meet an acquaintance on the street or in school and you know that both of you recognise each other. However, we will make no move to acknowledge each other's presence and pass on, as if strangers.

Weird, but this is me.
