Welcome Reception 0n 19 Sept

Sunday, October 22, 2006 @ 4:23 PM

Some long-overdue pictures from one of the most happening events at the Esplanade - Theatres on the Bay.

The Welcome Reception was one of the four social events deigned to showcase Singapore's ethnic and cultural varieties, as well as our hospitality for the guests.

Backstage action! Ethnic performers making final preparations.

Crazy moments with the CNA camera and props! A crowd had gathered around us then and were laughing at our antics. -_-"
And with Tung Soo Hwa and her new layered haircut!

Food stalls featuring local delights from Chinatown (Chinese) to Joo Chiat (Peranakan) lined the pathways and even shops inside the Esplanade were open for food sampling (Just look at the amount of Haagen Daaz we conquered). This was followed by the highlight of the evening, the fireworks from the roof terrace. It was a good 7 mins of lights, colours and sounds and one of the best I've ever seen!

Don't berate me for not sharing good stuff k! The last few mins of the fireworks galore that evening, courtesy of Doreal.

Yul-Mania

@ 12:55 AM

Would you want a Shin or Yul in your life? I'm torn between the two, but if I could choose, I would definitely pick Yul to fall for.

Here's a short drama he acted in.. :)

The New Urban Legend

Friday, October 20, 2006 @ 12:27 AM

In recent years, vengeful spirits have been prowling in new territories. They no longer reside in banana trees and gather on HDB rooftops. Modern spirits prefer the fast life and they like it quick, clean and easy.

My tuition kid asked me a question a few years ago.

'Do you know why people keep dying on MRT tracks?'

Why, I asked.

'Because the people who jumped down onto the tracks become gu hun ye gui (stray spirits). They lead a cursed existence as they died an unnatural death and they will never reincarnate. So, to move on to the next world, they need to seek a replacement. That is why they keep pulling people down onto the tracks.' He explained earnestly, looking wide-eyed. After which, to my amusement, he got spooked himself.

A middle-aged man was killed by an oncoming train at Chinese Garden MRT station yesterday night. I shivered, at the reality of having such an accident happen at a station I pass by every single day. Come to think of it, such train suicide incidents have been alarmingly common these years. Not all were of depressed folks seeking a quick way out though. Some fell off the platform (something I can't quite envision) and the most ridiculous one was the story I read in the papers a few weeks ago. After a heated argument, this bf shoved his gf down onto the MRT tracks, just as the train rumbled into the station. WTH?!

Looks like the installation of metal discs on the platform floor to increase friction and having patrolling officers were insufficient to deter the determined.

I can't imagine how badly a body will be maimed by an oncoming train. My colleague showed me an extremely gross email the other day, of this girl who had committed suicide in Sun Plaza. From the impact of the fall, her head had been ripped apart, gaping open between the eyes. It was a horrendous sight and made me marvel at the fragility of the human head. As I was telling bj, it reminded me of a smashed watermelon. Now, what happens when a train rams into you at high speed and with tremendous force?

Surely, there's a better way to depart the world with dignity intact?

Surely, these incidents can't really be the work of ... vengeful spirits?

Vivo is the new Orchard

How can a mall be so crowded before it's officially opened?

Amazed at the throng of people crowding the place on a friday afternoon.. Don't those people need to study or work or something?

Then again, even though it's not fully opened, their listing of shops is rather comprehensive. They have almost... everything. A cinema, a roof terrace with amphitheatre which would be a good place to gather at night and of course, St James Power Station.

The place is huge!

Foggy Woggy

Saturday, October 07, 2006 @ 11:48 PM

This year's autumn festival seems rather lacklustre as compared to previous years. So much smoke is hanging in the air that the moon can't be appreciated in its full glory. I haven't really seen kids wandering around with their lanterns either. Sigh.

Paper lanterns make me feel especially nostalgic. You know, those traditional types? Reminds me of my childhood days when I would balance it gingerly on the wooden rod, mindful of the lit candle inside as the wind blows it about. Of how I would yelp and dump it instantly as it caught fire.

My eyes are irritated and I've been coughing. I wish for a day of mindless, torrential rain!

Nooo Privacy

Sunday, October 01, 2006 @ 1:30 PM

Been listening to my neighbours quarrel for the past half hour, not that I'm keen to. However, I couldn't understand a word of it, coz they were spewing angry words in cantonese.

These are relatively new neighbours, who just moved in adjacent to us a couple of years ago. I've lost count of the years myself. Mama and sonny are the only ones left, after daughter married and moved out, followed by two deaths in the house. The first one to go was their adorable pet dog, Pocky, followed by ah ma who didn't seemed to be conversant in mandarin.

Pocky first aroused our interest in this family, coz being young, inquisitive kids, my bro and I were naturally attracted to animals. The most distinct memory was of me feeding bits of twisties to Pocky through the open door, trying my best to be discreet. However, I soon found that I wasn't that successful coz ah ma yelled at me to stop doing it. Hah.

When Pocky left, we were not aware of her demise. It was only after a long while that we started to notice her absence, the lack of barking, especially when my bro and I raced each other down the corridor.

Ah ma left the world sometime last year I think and the most memorable incident was of mama moving out of the flat temporarily, after the funeral. She was getting spooked. Which made me curious because why would someone be afraid of the spirit of a dear relative?

Omg, they are at it again. After the temporary lull, mama and sonny started bickering once more. Tsk.

There's a lack of privacy living in HDB flats. All of us are pigeon-holed together in such a way that we can't help but be kaypoh. How I wish I understand cantonese, so that at least I would be hearing words instead of static now.

I've never been really close to my neighbours. On the whole, I find them rather irksome, especially the aunties whom you meet in the lifts and quiz you on your results for every subject. What's the point of comparison when your son is in a different grade and from a different school? Bah.

Things used to be good in the kampungs, they say. The camaraderie, the feeling of security even when all doors are left open etc. Where is the kampung spirit now?

~~~
A hectic month ahead.
Meanwhile, I'm trying my best to complete two projects due for submission mid next week, after which I'm due for mugging till end of Oct.
Had to miss two gatherings this week due to school and work commitments and thus, aggravated my craving for fish & chips.
Which makes me wonder why I'm perpetually hungry these days.
~~~

I had a weird dream last night. It was about a lion ambushing the house, sauntering in and rendering us speechless in fear. I called 999 for help but took a long time in conveying the message as I had to whisper and hide my hp from the lion's view. However, when the police arrived, I chased them away to save their lives. There were only two policemen. How to defeat a lion like that?

Told you it was a weird dream.
