Cool On The Exterior, Warm Within

On Power & Beauty

Thursday, August 31, 2006 @ 11:23 PM

We had a press conference this afternoon graced by the Minister of State (MOS). It was a hectic morning of preparations and I unfortunately sustained paper cuts while putting together the press kits. I am always amazed that a piece of paper, flimsy as it is, can be powerful enough to slit my skin.

MOS is a lady, a fact which heralds my respect. In this time and age, as modern as it is, I still find it awe-inspiring that women are able to climb up the corporate leader and assume positions of power. It is especially gratifying to see people scurrying about to ensure that all is in place for the arrival of Her Eminence.

Looking around me, it is not hard to find other women who are similarly entrusted with authority in their hands. B makes grown men shiver in their shoes with her hard stare and others flustered with nervousness in her presence.

Beauty is power in itself. A beautiful lady CEO exudes an aura of confidence which comes about from the knowledge that others gaze at her in admiration. It stems from the certainty that no one can guess her actual age and the way she lifts her head high gives her added poise. Clad in that figure-hugging dress in the hue of the setting sun, with her silky tresses clasped in an elegant bun, she is the face of the company.

Sometimes I wonder where I will be in 5 years' time. Or more precisely, what I will be. I look at these beautiful, powerful women and wondered what they were like when they were 21. Were they already street-smart and assertive? Or were they still fumbling about in search of their paths, like so many of us are?

Reminds me of this kindergarten song which has remained as one of my favourites:

Que Sera Sera
When I was just a little girl,
I asked my mother,
What will I be?

Will I be pretty, will I be rich?
That's what she said to me,
Que Sera Sera..
Whatever will be, will be.
The future's not ours to see.
Que Sera Sera..

Not TOTO but...

Thursday, August 24, 2006 @ 8:28 PM

This ah peh was seated beside me on the train yesterday morning. White-haired and dressed in singlet and shorts, he was scribbling on a tiny sheet of paper on his lap. Must be a TOTO enthusiast, I thought. However, I glanced over and.... he was engrossed in a game of Sudoku!

Sudoku must be the new Mahjong!

I haven't really tried this popular puzzle before.. as I try to avoid anything associated with maths. Haha, yes I have mathematical phobia.

~~~
Think I should try to avoid having heaty food 4 days in a row next time as my tummy is throwing a lil tantrum.
No more malay and indian delights for me!
~~~

Recently, I wake up in the morning feeling bone-weary. Feeling like I have not gotten enough sleep when I have clocked at least 6 hours and craving a good massage.

I seem to go through this cycle from time to time; from a hyper me to a lacklustre version when I feel stretched with commitments. What with the big day coming in Sept, it's inevitable that I get tired easily these days.

Time to get a lil breather! Anyone knows where to get a relaxing, non-sleazy massage?

Not Siao-Mon Okay?

Sunday, August 20, 2006 @ 1:20 AM

Was on my way to the Padang this evening when I overheard this lass reproaching her little sis.

"Not Siao-Mon lah, okay! Sal-Mon is the fish which is very delicious, not the Siao-Mon you say!" After which, she did the cockscrew motion near her temple, emphasizing her point.

Kids can be very interesting at times.

~~~
It was Class 95 FM's Blockbuster Night @ the Padang. MI3 and X-Men were the action flicks picked for some 8000 folks, with the DJs livening the atmosphere by notches.
Me, Tabs & Xiaowan
Guess who happened to be seated beside us? NY CCA mate!
Entertainment b4 the movie: Heads/ Tails? The last one standing brings home a brand new printer!
Xiaowan - The constant in my life. Everyone around me seems to be changing except her. :p
Passing the parcel. Who will end up with the grand loot of the iPod shuffle in the end?
It was a great night, especially when we ended up talking about the old days. Us goons practising English in class, the army guys during NDP'99 and getting classmates to trim our hair in school. And in no time, we will be graduating from school. How time flies..
A relevation: IMF = Impossible Mission Force. Haha. A work term I'm accustomed to, tagged differently.
Fruit of our labour!
Saturday, August 19, 2006 @ 3:35 PM
The first episode of our MediaCorp TV programmes will be out next week!
Essentially a current-affairs programme which touches on the extent of local involvement in the IMF-WB Annual Meetings this coming Sept and features a short cameo appearance of yours truly. :p
Struck blind
Tuesday, August 15, 2006 @ 12:06 AM
I suspect I might be blind.
We were at MediaCorp today and my boss made a remark, "Hope you weren't starstruck." After much confusion from my side, he concluded that I had not spotted Andrea De Cruz when she walked past us. Not that I'm a fan of hers but I was still pretty much bummed out.
The second time this happened, I underwent the same initial state of confusion. Then he exclaimed, "You mean you didn't see Diana Ser? She was just beside us!" And all I could respond was "When??? Where??"
I am really rather hopeless.
But the fun part was when we were on the way to the editing room. We passed by the transparent glass room where the CNA presenters usually did their news broadcast, where you can spot the people working in the office behind the news anchor. Well, I had to walk through that office on the way. And it was a definitely an unique experience being on the other side of the tv screen for once.
I was surprised to see several students in school uniform loitering around. Don't need to study meh?? Star-gazers who wait it out to catch a glimpse of their favourite idols. I was never one of those people. Heh. The most extreme that I have resorted to is collecting posters and articles on the celeb. Which isn't that extreme actually.
I must say that the Caldecott Hill offices are really a maze. I think I can get lost in there and never find my way out...ever.
Paying It Forward
Tuesday, August 08, 2006 @ 10:37 PM
The night I turned 21, I got into bed ready to concuss and my head hit something hard in my pillow. Baffled, I reached into the casing and withdrew a tube of choc gello candy (I like!), along with a Happy Birthday note from my bro. How sweet. I'm sure my bro would make a great bf when he is in a good mood.
My bro got a year older recently too. 3 days after mine in fact. That's why we only have one birthday cake if we celebrated yearly. I always thought we were short-changed.
The night he turned 17, he got into bed ready to concuss and his head hit something soft and cushiony. Something foreign was under his pillow. In the darkness, he sure was spooked. He withdrew a leather sling bag from under his pillow, huge enough to contain his laptop. How sweet. He was sure his sister would make a great gf when she is in a good mood.
Tit for Tat! :p
~~~

I remember when I was 16, my lovely bunch of NY gals agreed to do something together when all of us turned 21. Which is coming soon in end Aug when dear Mui & YY become adults!

We wanted to go catch a R(A) film together. Which isn't such a biggie now but still, makes me feel so nostalgic. Of those days when we were still so young and carefree, closeted in that all-girls environment where we worried over impending 'O's and when we oohed and aahed together at spotting the G-string of our babelicious form teacher and speculating if she was flirting with a particular ang moh teacher, Mr E.

Those were the days, really.

~~~
After the National Day Observance Ceremony in the office today, I am feeling rather patriotic.
"This is home, truly, where I know I must be. Where my dreams wait for me, where the river always flows..."
Pardon my nasal voice.
Happy Birthday, S'pore!
*Ah ChoO*
Monday, August 07, 2006 @ 10:34 PM
Sneezing non-stop today.. what a great way to start off as a 21-year-old. It's been so long since I actually fell sick that I feel weird-ish. Like real burnt-out.
Hope to cure myself of it soon... lots of meet-ups this week! Blocked nose, teary eyes, earth-shattering sneezes... get as far away from me as possible!
Moved
Wednesday, August 02, 2006 @ 11:50 PM
Was reading the last few pages of Catherine Lim's novel on the way home earlier. It took a while for me to really get into the story at first but I was tearing as I read the last chapter. I was flustered to find that a solid drop had leaked out of one eye and hastily brushed it away, before I discreetly looked around.
How embarrassing it would have been, if someone had caught me at that off-guard moment.
Still at Work
@ 8:44 PM
"You have 19 voice mails."
Am still in the office, clearing my voice mail. I've been getting so many calls while I was out of office for 3/4 of the day. And most of them from God-knows-who. *shakes head*
